Lovely writing by an experienced "country girl"! Thanks for the thoughts and your time to put them all together. Memories of my first "animal death" of a tiny Bantam chicken came flooding back. At eight years old, I cried all night over the loss of that tiny chick. Life with animals? Changes us!
This is beautiful; thank you for sharing. We only have 4 cows which are pets and a bottle calf that I’m raising for my elderly in laws. This way too large baby bull was birthed by one of their first time moms who rejected him and left him standing alone, wet and cold in the pasture during an ice storm. Witnessing a newborn shivering in silence waiting for its mother’s warmth while she kicks at him and then walks away with disdain will rip at your heart…people who haven’t experienced it can only guess at what farmers and ranchers go through. That is, until they experience it themselves. Some day, all too soon, I’m going to have to surrender this adorable bull calf back to my in-laws for sale as a breeding bull - and it will break my heart. I named him Azariah, because Yahweh did indeed help us save him, and he sleeps with his chin on my lap and thinks I’m his momma. I’m investing my time and heart knowing that one day he’ll have to leave and will take a piece of me with him. Perhaps that’s when I’ll experience a whole other facet of this beautiful life with cattle. Perhaps. New subscriber here, looking forward to reading more. (And thanks for the recipe! Chocolate Mayo Cake is one of my favorites!)
Blessings. I'm glad you shared these thoughts it speaks of our humanity and God's grace. Even sorrow can be redeemed.

The cake doesn't use eggs?
Hi Theodora, the mayo plays that role
